Everyone Needs a Friend

"Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.  My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend."  Job 16:19-21

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my father I have made known to you."  John 15:15

Everyone needs a friend.  We can try to make it through this life on our own.  And some of us will do pretty well.  But if we are honest with ourselves, we know there is a void down deep.  We desire, we long, for someone to know how we feel and to really care about us.  Most of us will only have a few good, close friends in our lifetime.  And I pray we take care of those relationships with tenderness and intentionality.

Yet, even our best friend, even our spouse, sometimes cannot understand the depths of our soul.  There are times when what we are thinking and feeling, times of uncertainty, change, upheaval...when there is only One who really understands.

Job declares it with passion when he tells the reader that this "Friend" is in heaven and He is making a plea for us.  He knows our inner most thoughts and knows how to communicate them for us to God.  He is Jesus Christ.  And He knows because He has walked among us.  He understands what it is like to feel and think things that are beyond words.

I pray this week that you will turn toward your heavenly Friend and call on Him.  You do not need to explain; He already knows your heart.
